Prestigious British opera house Glyndebourne is inviting UK-based artists between the ages of 16 and 30 to enter its third annual Tour Programme cover design competition. The Glyndebourne Tour Programme is the sister publication of the Glyndebourne Festival Programme, a collector’s item well-known for its contemporary front covers. Recent cover artists include Julian Opie, Grayson Perry and Anish Kapoor.

Gus Christie, Executive Chairman of Glyndebourne, said: “Visual arts has always been an integral part of Glyndebourne on and off the stage and this competition continues our aspirations to engage with young visual artists.”

The theme for the cover design competition this year is vanity, and the competition entries should reflect this. Two of the productions in Glyndebourne’s 2015 Tour – Saul and Don Pasquale – deal with vanity in completely different ways. Saul has strong links with the tragedy of King Lear, where his vanity, arrogance and denial bring about his madness and downfall; in the farcical Don Pasquale an old bachelor is flattered into seeking a younger wife in the hope of taking revenge upon his nephew, and it is his vanity that allows others to pull the wool over his eyes. Glyndebourne would like young artists to explore the theme of vanity and how it can bring about a fall from grace or from power.

Artists are invited to submit paintings, drawings, original prints, mixed media, photography and digital pieces for the competition (no video or sculpture). Pieces must work on two levels – as printed artwork on the programme front cover and as an exhibition piece.

The closing date for all entries is Tuesday 30 June 2015. The winning artist will be announced shortly afterwards following the decision of a specially convened panel of judges. The winning artist will see their artwork grace the cover of 10,000 copies of the Glyndebourne Tour Programme and be exhibited at Glyndebourne and participating galleries this autumn. Now in its third year, the Glyndebourne Tour Art competition acts as an opportunity to champion young and emerging artistic talent of a different kind. The competition offers a platform for young artists to raise their profile nationally, and an opportunity to see their art displayed at Glyndebourne and sold as part of a collection. Competition winners will also receive four free tickets to a Tour 2015 performance.
