Thanks for all the entries you’ve sent so far for our cover design competition. If you’ve still to enter (remember, you can enter multiple times), here are a few pointers to increase your chances of winning.
Look at the required format: Magazine covers are portrait-format. Using this format will greatly increase your chances of your artwork working as a cover design.
Look at the required dimensions: We will need your artwork to be printable at a size of 240mm wide by 310mm high at 300dpi – but send us a low-res JPEG first please!
Make sure you have a strong focal point: Magazine covers should stand out and draw the viewer’s eye to a bold part of them. This could be a portrait’s eyes, a structure in a cityscape, a typographic message… the possibilities are endless!
Make sure text can be placed on areas of the artwork: It’s not just about the imagery! We need room to tell you what’s in the issue too, so consider this when you’re planning your composition.
Be inspired by Advanced Photoshop: Take a look at our most recent covers. What stands out about them? What makes them look good? Check out our tutorials for pro art advice.
Make sure your entry is clearly marked: Please use only the subject line ‘Cover competition’ for your entry, to make sure that it’s counted.
Ensure your entry abides by the competition rules: It must be an original piece that hasn’t been published before, and must not include nudity or fan art of copyrighted characters. Full rules and Terms and Conditions are here.
Please don’t use your entry to pitch for freelance work: If you’d like to pitch for freelance work then by all means drop us a line! However, we will not look at pitches that form part of your competition entry. Send us a separate email – our contact details can be found here.
Remember to include your contact details: Please include your name and full address with your entry, and use an email address that you check regularly, so we can tell you if you win!
Use layers and take screenshots: Remember, if you win, we’ll be paying you to create a tutorial in the magazine showing how your artwork was created. Keep all of those iterations!
Remember, our cover design competition closes on 27th November 2014. Enter by sending a low-res JPEG of your artwork to advancedphotoshop[dot]co[dot]uk with the subject line ‘Cover competition’. Good luck!
