Learn to design and paint a cool fantasy helmet from start to finish

Tutorial preview: Perfect your brushwork

In this tutorial we’ll show you some fast tips on how to create a dazzling fantasy helmet. We also aim to teach you a little more about how to achieve authentic surface shine, replicating a metal texture, and how to effectively mould and shape an object cleanly, eliminating any confusion between the viewer and what it is you’re trying to say within your design.

Prior to following this tutorial, you should gather a few shiny things from around your house: a pot, a pan, a thimble, or even a piece of armour if you have it. The best way to learn how to paint something is to simply observe it. Put the object under different types of light, at different proximities, and either look and see what happens on the object or try to sketch or paint what you see.

When attempting to produce what you are observing, be sure to slow down and paint or draw what you actually see, not what you think you see – slow and steady wins this creative race. You’ll find that learning to accurately see things will help when you’re not looking at anything at all.
