Develop Cyborg looks using one photograph, digital painting and 3D layering techniques

In this tutorial you’ll learn how to utilise brushes in Photoshop CS5, digital painting techniques and 3D assets to create Cyborg special effects. It’s recommended you have some experience with drawing on a graphics tablet and brushes in Photoshop to follow the tutorial more effectively. We’ll use as many standard brushes as possible to keep things simple. Please see the disc provided for many of the support materials.

To save you time switching between brush modes it’s encouraged to install the tool presets for the AJ-tools.tpl file from the disc, as they include the brushes directly in Color Dodge (CD) mode. Or access them from the Fantasio Brushes.abr brush set if you want to apply your own settings. There’s an OBJ format 3D model texture, and an alternative non-Photoshop Extended rendered file available also.

The inspiration for this work comes from movies like TRON, I, Robot and Terminator. The visual language of these blockbusters has definitely had an impact on many artists. The synthetic look defines an unreachable yet intriguing state of a perfect being.

Photoshop is the weapon of choice in creating such looks, because it offers photo-editing tools next to 3D, digital-painting equipment and the option to rotate the canvas on the go. Photo manipulation goes hand-in-hand with this tutorial through drawing and painting, so be prepared to warm up your tablet, fasten your seat belts and get the creative juices flowing.
