Mike Campau reveals how evolving your working relations is as important as enhancing your design skills

Frequent AP contributor Mike Campau has realised that constant promotion and circulating fresh work means maximum attention. “Whether it’s using social media, online blogging or contributing to magazines like Advanced Photoshop, its all part of building my brand,” he reveals.

However the staging of Campau’s brand is reinforced through his improving technical ability. The biggest change to his work has been the ability to apply realistic CG elements, which once eluded him. He explains: “With advanced render engines and huge increases in processing speed, Photoshop has become an invaluable tool that I now use every day.”

The connection of Photoshop tools to isolate objects is also paramount in his workflow. “I always use calculations, Selective Color, and Refine Edges,” he explains. But evolving industry relations has been just as important as enhancing digital skills. “By far the biggest growth in my career has come from my connections. Collaborating with photographers has definitely pushed me to be a better artist, offering new insights on creating images.”
