Adobe Photoshop Express

Cost: Free

Works with: iPod, iPhone and iPad

Designed to work with the Adobe.com service, this app is also a useful mobile image editor in its own right. You can deal with basic edits such as cropping, straightening, rotating and flipping, in addition to more intricate tweaks (exposure, saturation and more). There is also the option to apply effects, filters and borders.

TiltShift Generator

Cost: £0.69/$0.99 US

Works with: iPod, iPhone and iPad

A fantastic little app that allows you to apply a tilt shift effect on your photos. You control the radius and position of the blur, and have options for altering the saturation, brightness and contrast. All of the editing takes place using sliders, with instant preview. There is also a more expensive version just for iPad.

Search for Infinicam on iTunes Store

Cost: £1.49/$1.99 US

Works with: iPhone, iPod and iPad

As its name suggests, Infinicam offers its users a wealth of camera styles to apply to images. Press the New Camera button to generate a random style. You can also apply film borders to complete the effect. When you find an effect you like, save it for later use and then move on to the next style.

Artist’s Touch

Works with: iPad

It’s the most expensive app here but is worth it for satiating your painting desires while out and about. Artist’s Touch is a real media painting tool that lets users take their photos and paint over them. There is a huge range of brushes (such as oil, pencil, airbrush, charcoal and watercolour) and textures on offer and its ‘photo-paint’ algorithm means that you can achieve good results easily. A cheaper iPhone version is also available.
